Cederberg Rooibos

Country of Origin: South Africa

Notes:

The story of Rooibos starts around the turn of the century in South Africa's beautiful Cederberg region. It was the locals of the area who first discovered that the fine needle like leaves of the wild "Aspalathus Linearis" plant made a tasty aromatic tea. It was they who first harvested the plants, chopped them with axes and bruised them with hammers leaving them to ferment before drying in the sun.

Rooibos is an herb that contains no caffeine. The benefits of drinking rooibos tea can be many, which most people may not be aware of. Keep in mind that while rooibos tea can be useful in preventing disease or reducing symptoms, do not consider it a treatment for any serious disease. Some of the benefits of Rooibos tea may include:

- For heart health. Rooibos tea has cardioprotective properties that may reduce the risk of heart disease.

- Helpful for diabetes and regulating blood sugar. Two key antioxidants, aspalathin and nothofagin, may lower glucose levels in the blood and prevent insulin resistance. Regular consumption of rooibos tea could be helpful for managing symptoms of diabetes as well as preventing type 2 diabetes. Aside from preventing disease, well balanced blood sugar is ideal for keeping consistent energy levels throughout the day.

- Aid in sleep. It can be effective against sleeplessness or insomnia. In South Africa rooibos is said to have a soothing effect on the system without being a sedative, it is known for being very gentle; it is often given to children with colic to help soothe them to sleep.

- Is Low in Tannins. For people who are at risk for low iron or anemia, rooibos is one of the best teas to drink. Tannins are a type of astringent polyphenol commonly found in chocolate, black tea, green tea, wine, and other foods. In excess, tannins may start to block the absorption of iron in plant-based foods. Especially for vegans and vegetarians, iron absorption may improve by switching to rooibos tea.

- Better digestion. Rooibos tea is a natural antispasmodic, which means it can help relax cramped muscles. If you experience cramps and indigestion after meals, a warm cup of rooibos may help.

- Allergy relief. Traditional use of rooibos tea as medicine in South Africa includes the treatment of allergies. The quercetin in rooibos tea may act as a natural antihistamine. But this health benefit remains anecdotal as modern research has yet to confirm the effect. If you suffer from allergies, it doesn’t hurt to try drinking rooibos tea and see if it provides relief.

- Aid weight loss. Studies have shown rooibos tea to help with weight management by inhibiting adipogenesis, AKA the process of building fat in the body. Drinking rooibos tea may lower the amount of fat stored in cells and prevent body fat from accumulating. It may also balance leptin, the hunger hormone, so you don’t overeat. If you are looking to manage your weight, rooibos might be the gentle yet effective tea you need.
